HUMAN 2

This is the 4th week

The arguments pick up and we now consider the parameters of what being human can be.  The Film Robbie ignited a sense of despair not unlike that experienced by the robot in AI. For a human I think being completely alone is a difficult thing to deal with. Gum Drop ensures the hierarchy of the relationship with humans. I found the film Avatar Days initially sad but on reflection thought it was quite normal human behaviour..look at how people represent a football team. costumes tatoos etc.
Other robots in VERY human form such as Ash (Alien) Pris (Blade Runner) Terminator(Terminator) give a sense of what transhumanism  may predict is inevitable. N Katherine Hayles arguments are compelling and  I agree that the Transhumnistic urge supports some of the worst aspects of capitalist ideology. The military and porn sectors are testimony to that.  However as Hayles points out technogenesis is something that runs deep throughout humankind and so scrutinising closely the relationship between humans and technology is critical to our future.
However one observation from the 4 weeks is that the technology seems to come first and the human adopts and adapts to the technology. This is a particular insight that is reflected in the EPSRC Technology Enhanced Learning Research Programme. Perhaps we can start to design technology that specifically meets the learning styles, abilities and educational needs of humans rather than adapting to technological advancements made to make money in other sectors.
